Simon Gray's more detailed description of the walk |
We leave the bus stop and turn left down Totley Hall Lane passing the Fleur de Lys, now apartments. Further along to the right of the road is Totley Hall, also now apartments (before that the Management School of Sheffield City Polytechnic). We enter Totley Hall Farm and walk due south to Gillfield Wood, through the wood crossing Totley Brook on a footbridge. Now in Derbyshire - the border runs along the brook here. (The brook continues along the edge of Totley, is joined by Old Hay Brook and becomes the Sheaf). Climbing from Totley Brook across fields, still going south, we reach Fanshawe Gate Old Hall on a quiet lane. A short way along the lane to the right brings us to a footpath slightly uphill to cross the B6054 from Owler Bar to Holmesfield at Lydgate. Continuing south across fields, and downhill now, Horsleygate Lane is reached. Turning right to follow the lane for about 400 m to a narrow path down to Horsleygate Road (B6051). We cross the B6051 road to a stone stile into a field to a muddy track. Crossing the track to a footbridge (SK305766) we turned right (west) alongside the stream up through woods to enter a field. Crossing the field uphill with a gully and trees to our left, we leave the field onto Fox Lane (via a muddy section of field). South west on Fox Lane for a short distance we turn right at Bank Green Farm into Car Road which leads us down past Smeekley Farm. A short distance beyond we turn left onto a footpath ~ south, rising slowly and steadily (Hewetts Bank), and out of the woods onto Ramsley Moor. After about a mile, a steeper path uphill on the left leads to Fox Lane again and Shillito Wood (for lunch). Leaving Shillito Wood, past the medieval cross, we go west along the road to a gate at Ramsley Reservoir (now drained). Following a clear moorland track over the breached dam wall we cross the Baslow road (A621) at SK281752) and onto Big Moor. The track turns north, passing a small reservoir and, after about 1 mile, the buildings formerly used at the (drained) larger reservoir – Barbrook. Continuing north, on a less clear track, we soon reach the B6054 and cross it onto Totley Moss close to the gas pipeline compound. Crossing Totley Moss, to the west of Brown Edge, we descend via Moss Road and Strawberry Lee Lane to the Cricket Inn, Chapel Lane and the top of Hillfoot Road close to the Cross Scythes Pub for a bus home. |
